A Very Albuquerque Holiday: Local Traditions, Gift Ideas & Cheer from Ella Rose

There’s something magical about the holidays in Albuquerque — the soft glow of luminarias lighting Old Town, the scent of piñon pine curling from kiva fireplaces, and the sense of community that makes every gathering feel special.

At Ella Rose Hair Boutique, we love celebrating the season by sharing what inspires us most: local traditions, thoughtful gifts, and a little self-care that helps you shine through the busiest time of year.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to experience and celebrate the holidays, New Mexico style.

✨ Local Traditions to Experience This Season

A New Holiday Tradition: La Estrella – A Flamenco Story of the Kings’
Quest

The holidays wouldn’t be complete without a little art, rhythm, and soul. La Estrella, presented by the National Institute of Flamenco, brings all three to life in a stunning, family-friendly performance. This magical story blends traditional flamenco, Spanish carols, regional dances, and even Las Posadas — creating an unforgettable celebration of culture and community.

The National Institute of Flamenco presents La Estrella: A Flamenco Story of the Kings’
Quest, a family-friendly holiday tradition that has become one of Albuquerque’s most beautiful
winter events.
This magical production features Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company,
along with invited guest artists, including singer Isa Jurado (Córdoba, Spain), dancer Ricardo
Moro (Madrid, Spain), and guitarist Ángel Ruiz (Córdoba, Spain).

The cast also includes talented student performers from the Institute’s Conservatory of Flamenco Arts.

La Estrella weaves flamenco dance and music, villancicos (Spanish Christmas carols),
Spanish regional dances, Escuela Bolera, African dance, and Las Posadas into an
unforgettable holiday story.

It’s a show that celebrates light, hope, and connection — and it’s one of those rare
performances that feels magical for every generation. Make it part of your family’s Christmas
tradition.

Where to See the Luminarias (or… Farolitos?)

Ah, yes, the great New Mexico holiday debate — are they luminarias or farolitos?

In Albuquerque and southern New Mexico, the glowing paper lanterns are called luminarias. But
Up north, in Santa Fe and Taos, those same bags of light are known as farolitos, while
Luminarias refer to candles or lanterns meant to guide the way to Midnight Mass.

Whatever you call them, these flickering lights are pure holiday magic. They symbolize warmth,
hope, and community — lighting rooftops, pathways, and hearts every Christmas Eve.
Best places to see them:

  • Old Town Plaza — a classic, walkable route glowing with candlelight.
  • Country Club neighborhood — often voted the best luminaria route in the city.
  • South Valley and Barelas — peaceful, scenic drives through historic areas.
  • Ridgecrest and Nor Este — neighborhoods known for going all out with decor.

Pro tip: Arrive around dusk, bundle up, bring cocoa, and stroll respectfully — the slower you go,
the more it feels like Christmas.

Celina’s Biscochitos

You can’t celebrate a New Mexico Christmas without a biscochito (or a dozen).

We’re obsessed with Celina’s Biscochitos, especially the Red Chile flavor — a favorite of Meagan’s! These cookies are a delicious nod to New Mexican heritage, baked with cinnamon, anise, and a touch of spice that makes every bite unforgettable.

They’re perfect for gifting, sharing, or enjoying on your own with a cup of coffee.

Order early or visit Celina’s Biscochitos this holiday season.
